TOFU or not TOFU: that is the question
Soy products, such as tofu, are high in protein and have become a mainstay in today’s health conscience consumers. Scientific evidence is highly supportive of the role of soy in decreasing cholesterol, symptoms associated with menopause such as hot flashes.
Less conclusive is the scientific support of the role of soy in preventing cardiovascular diseases and certain cancers. For example, studies found a reduced risk of mid-life breast cancer in women. However, the soy consumption must be high, begin early in life, and include folate.
It’s all good news … for women … that is. New research reports that men who eat an average of half a serving of soy food a day have lower concentrations of sperm than men who do not eat soy foods.
According to research published (July 2008) in Europe's leading reproductive medicine journal, Human Reproduction, he association between high-soy and low-sperm was particularly marked in men who were overweight or obese.
Dr Jorge Chavarro, Harvard School of Public Health, found that men who ate the most soy food had less than half the sperm concentration than men who did not consume soy products.
Plant-derived compounds with estrogen effects are found mainly in soy beans and soy-derived products. Animal studies have linked the high consumption of soy with infertility in animals. Now, the association between soy and fertility is evidenced in humans.
Dr Chavarro analyzed the intake of 15 soy-based foods in 99 men who had been evaluated for low-fertility. The research subjects were asked how often and how much soy food they had eaten in the previous three months. The data were adjusted for factors such as the subject’s age, abstinence time, BMI, liquor, caffeine and smoking.
The study does not reveal why soy foods have this effect on sperm, but Dr Chavarro speculates that increased estrogenic activity may have an adverse effect on the production of sperm by interfering with other hormonal signals, especially in overweight men.
