Mel Gibson's The Passion of the Christ Dr. Ted Baehr, founder of the Christian Film & Television Commission™, calls Mel Gibson's film “The Passion of the Christ”, a tremendous opportunity for Hollywood to expand its movie-going audience by 100 million people. Baehr notes that while 17 million people go to the movies every week more than 135 million go to church.

“People have been waiting for something that represents their faith accurately,” Dr. Baehr told USA TODAY. “There is a tremendous hunger out there.” It appears Hollywood has jumped on the band wagon. Internationally known film critic, Roger Ebert has given "The Passion" his trademark, "thumbs up."

Since it’s formation in 1978, the Christian Film and Television Commission™, has been dedicated to redeeming the values of the entertainment industry according to biblical truths. The Commission has encouraged the production of many more theater film releases, and television movies and programming with Christian references such as “Finding Nemo,” “Spy Kids,” “7th Heaven,” and “Touched By An Angel.

Under Dr. Baehr’s guidance, the Christian Film and Television Commission™ established the Movieguide® magazine in 1985, a year that held only one movie with positive Christian content. In 2003, there were 116 movies that fit the Movieguide® criteria of ‘positive Christian content, a figure that represented 45 percent of the films released. Noted, Dr. Baehr: “When Movieguide® first began, 81 percent of movies released were R-rated. Now that figure has dropped to around 42 percent."
