MATURE MARKET HEADLINES POSTED 09/22/97

Menopause Maven Founds Red Hot Mamas Club

Baby Boomers are entering menopause at a rate of 4,000 women per day. These women can expect to live one-third of their lives after menopause. However, they are no longer solely concerned with longevity but also with the quality of their life.

One in three mature women (50-plus) believe that people lose sex appeal as they get older. However, a menopause expert counters that belief. "Menopause marks the end of women's reproductive years", says Karen Giblin, founder of Prime Plus Red Hot Mamas, "but not the end of sensuality". Giblin believes that living longer makes some women more confident and that confidence leads to a heightened level of intimacy with their partners.

However, for many women, menopause is still mysterious territory. As a result, they are seeking sound advice about sexuality in mid-life. So Giblin has co-authored (along with Pharmacia & UpJohn) a new brochure called "Sex and Menopause: What's Age Go To Do With It?".

The free brochure helps women understand and respond to changes in their periods, health, sexual drive, and body image. Includes a checklist for monitoring common symptoms. Receive a free copy by calling: 1-888-800-8545.

Nutrition Labels Really Do Influence Dietary Habits

People who read nutrition labels on food products are eating healthier, consuming significantly less fat and significantly more fruits and vegetables then their counterparts who don't read labels. These findings are the result of a study by Saint Louis University School of Public Health. Funded by the Centers for Disease Control, it is the first study to look at the association between label reading and actual dietary practice.

Of the people whose diets were low in fat, 57 percent reported reading labels all or most of the time. By contrast, of the people whose diets were high in fat, only 35 percent reported reading labels all or most of the time.

The majority of those who read labels said they looked primarily for information about fat (84%). The calorie information was the second most read part (68%), followed by saturated fat (48%), cholesterol and sodium (45%) and far behind was fiber (21%).

The study reinforced the purpose of creating the Nutrition Labeling and Education Act of 1990, which sought to simplify and standardize food labels and make nutrition information easier for consumers to understand.

Seniors Save Face With Rejuvenation Surgery

The evolution of laser resurfacing techniques is producing dramatic improvement in full face resurfacing, according to two studies reported at the annual meeting of the American Society of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons (ASPRS) in San Francisco, California this week.

One study was made to establish a consistent method of laser skin resurfacing that would result in predictable improvement of facial skin quality. In that study, a conservative technique of laser skin resurfacing was shown to provide dramatic improvement in skin that was damaged by facial acne scarring.

A second study examined the combination of full laser resurfacing with a facelift for rejuvenation of the aging face. All subjects in this study underwent facelift and skin resurfacing with the CO2 laser in the same session.

Completing the two procedures in one session appears to be beneficial to the patient because there is only one anesthetic, one recovery period, and better results than the one procedure alone. Consumers can call the Plastic Surgery Information Service at 1-800-635-0635, or visit the ASPRS website at www.plasticsurgery.org

Not Tonight Dear, I Have A Headache

"Not tonight dear, I have a headache". That may become a male complaint now that a new and highly effective treatment for male impotence has been discovered, by accident. Heralded as the "biggest sexual breakthrough since the birth control pill", this new drug was actually intended to treat chest pains.

However, men reported that the new drug, sildenafil didn't do a thing for their hearts. Instead, it was working miracles on their sex drives. Sue Ellin Browder, writing for New Choices magazine reported that when men take the drug one hour before lovemaking, it blocks an enzyme that allows blood to flow out of the penis, resulting in continued firmness.

Discovered in England, the drug improved nearly nine out of ten cases of impotence that had existed from three months to 40 years. Side effects in some men, however, include indigestion, backaches, and the infamous "headache". As in "Not Tonight Dear". Read more about it in this month's issue of New Choices.

Learn How To Hypnotize A Frog

At 206 years of age, "The Old Farmer's Almanac" is indisputably the oldest almanac published today, and its history proves its dedication to providing the most-entertaining facts, features, and fun. For example, the almanac has an exclusive article on "How to Hypnotize a Frog".

This simple technique works on certain cats, too. And, of course, there's the 1998 consumer tastes and trends section where you'll learn about this year's "Hot Collectibles". Namely, anything that reminds baby boomers of grandmother's house such as toys and furniture from the 1950's.

Oh, yes, there's also an article on the geography of "eating dirt", and a prediction of a possible "health-food backlash". Check out the "The Old Farmer's Almanac" at it's website www.almanac.com.

You will learn important facts like "the average women speaks 25,000 more words per day than the average man does". I'll bet men speak twice as many words as women do. But men end up having to eat most of their words.
