National Assisted Living Week
National Assisted Living Week is scheduled for September 7-13, beginning on Grandparents' Day. Sponsored by the American Health Care Association's (AHCA) National Center for Assisted Living (NCAL), the week recognizes this relatively new and growing model of service for the elderly by focusing on different assisted living-related activities each year.
This year, the focus is on the customer. AHCA and NCAL have developed a customer satisfaction assessment tool designed to measure how satisfied assisted living customers are with the services they receive. The customer satisfaction tool is part of the "Dedicated to Excellence" kit that was developed for 1997 National Assisted Living Week.
Assisted Living providers interested in receiving a free copy of the kit may send a written request to: Assisted Living Week, National Center for Assisted Living, 1201 L Street, NW, Washington, DC 20005. Copies provided while supply last.

PHRMA: Best Medicine For Longevity
Life is not only getting longer, its getting better, thanks in large part to medicines that are helping older Americans lead active lives and maintain their independence.
91 pharmaceutical companies are currently working on 178 medicines to treat such threats to an independent lifestyle for seniors as Alzheimer's, arthritis, and Parkinson's disease, according to a new survey by the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America (PHRMA).
These 178 potential medicines are in addition to the more than 400 drugs in testing for heart disease, cancer, and stroke ... the three leading killers of older Americans. Recent medical breakthroughs include: therapies that have reduced elder disabilities by 15% between 1982 and 1994, clot-buster drugs, and estrogen replacement therapy.
$19 billion is invested each year in the pursuit of discovering and developing new drugs.
