State of Florida Senior Gambling The Florida Council on Compulsive Gambling (FCCG) published a seven-part series of self-help recovery workbooks targeting senior compulsive gamblers and their families.

"A Chance for Change" is a new workbook designed to act as a self-help program for older adults suffering from the adverse effects of problem and compulsive gambling.

According to a prevalence study published by FCCG in April of 2003, more than 650,000 older adults in Florida (one-in-20) report having serious to severe gambling-related problems.

Defined as a pathological disorder in which an individual cannot resist the impulse to gamble, compulsive gambling is a condition that can lead to negative personal or social consequences.

"Chance for Change" examines how seniors can escape from the grips of compulsive gambling through creating a plan for positive change, dealing with financial and legal problems, and taking charge of one’s life. Additional resources for statewide and national assistance such as professional treatment, self-help groups and print resources, are also listed in the publication.

The goal "A Chance for Change" is to help those older adults experiencing gambling related difficulties to eliminate self-defeating negative behaviors, to think clearly and to make better decisions that can lead to a healthier lifestyle. The workbook can be used either independently, or in conjunction with support groups or professional counseling.

Seniors in need of the workbooks may call (888) ADMIT-IT to obtain a free copy of the publication. Treatment and other healthcare professionals can order the workbooks for $25 by mail at FCCG, 237 Lookout Place, Suite 100, Maitland, Florida 32751.

"Chance for Change" is FCCG’s statewide program to increase awareness and education of compulsive gambling among Florida’s senior citizen population.

A not-for-profit 501c(3)organization initiated in 1988, FCCG helps those adversely affected by problem and compulsive gambling. FCCG services include brochures, videos, reports, a Web site and a 24-hour Problem Gambling HelpLine, (888) ADMIT-IT.
