Eldercare Tele-Event Links Generations

When it comes to generating new ideas for family eldercare, five generations are better than one. And, this statewide intergenerational teleconference promises to link these like-minded caregivers.

A statewide teleconference promises to link five generations of caregivers to discuss cooperative efforts aimed at fulfilling community needs. Illinois Department on Aging Director Margo E. Schreiber announced that the satellite teleconference will be held on May 16, 2001 in recognition of National Older Americans Month.

The generations participating in the event range from the "G.I. Generation" (those born between 1901-1931) to the "Millennial Generation" (those born after 1982). Titled "Intergenerational Dialogue: a tool for solving problems", the teleconference will link, via satellite, a total of five generations.

Groups encouraged to participate in the event include Big Brothers, Big Sisters, Boys and Girls Clubs, AARP, clergy, social service agency staff, health care workers, and senior citizens. "New ways to help family caregivers will be explored, especially how to lessen the stress of those who are caring for an aging parent and raising children at the same time", says Schreiber.

The satellite broadcast is planned for 9AM to 12:30PM (Chicago time). For more information or to register, log-on to the Illinois Department on Aging website at: www.state.il.us/aging/home.htm

Event co-sponsors include the Illinois Department on Aging, University of Illinois Extension Services, and the Illinois State Library. Those who visit the office on aging website can review materials used for community participation. In all, thirteen statewide satellite broadcast sites plan to participate.
