Adventure Magazine - July/August 2001 If you're like most adventurous people, you don't need a seasonal alarm clock to announce the arrival of Summer. No sir, you can already feel the summer-side of your psyche sprouting like Spring-green grass. In fact, a little voice in your head is whispering that it's time for the big "E" ... "Excitement". You're feeling "good to go", but where DO you go in order to find exciting opportunities for action adventure? Read on.

As luck would have it, there's plenty of new literature on hundreds of "roam'n holidays" designed to fulfill your wanderlust for exciting new adventures. And, if you can't get away right now, then travel vicariously through the pages of "Extreme Classics", a collection of 100 "Greatest Adventure Books of All Time". It's all in the July/August 2001 issue of National Geographic Adventure (NGA) magazine (photo). Look for it on news-stands July 3.

In the forthcoming issue of NGA magazine, a panel of writers, critics and experts, led by Adventure book critic Anthony Brandt, chose the best true stories of exploration, survival and recreation. The panel evaluated not only each book's literary merit but also considered its adrenaline factor and its impact on our history or culture.

Here's the top 10 of the 100 Extreme Classic books designed to keep you up reading all night to see what happens. Readers will also find an article on "The Hot Zones", America's top outdoor-sports towns that serve as base camps for summer adventure. The July/August 2001 issue of NGA magazine describes each of the ten adrenaline outposts, with a guide on what to do, where to stay, and what to eat. A map insert of each "Hot Zone" helps the reader zero-in on the geographic location. For rock climbers there's the Endless Wall near Fayetteville, West Virginia. Canyon country hikers will take interest in the breath-taking landscape of Torrey, Utah. Kayak enthusiasts will find outstanding trails through tidewater glaciers in Seward, Alaska. Of course, there's plenty more for horse-back riders, cyclists, and other adventure activists.

Got too little time for a long get-a-way? No problem. "Fast Breaks" is another article for people who sneak off for a week or less. These adventure "Nibblers", now constitute the majority of travelers in the United States. What kind of adventure can you experience in six days? How about a volcanic trek through Iceland, paddling the fjords in Newfoundland, visiting the world's tallest waterfall in Venezuela's jungle, or cycling a portion of the Tour de France?

If you're looking for a little excitement in your life, you'll find it in this issue. Whether you want to walk through a rainforest or wade through a travel adventure book, there's lots of excitement to experience in this issue of National Geographic Adventure magazine.
