AARP Hardy Award Bentley Lipscomb (photo center), AARP state director received the first C. Colburn Hardy Older Advocate Award in Miami, Florida on August 23, 1999. The award was presented by Florida Governor Jeb Bush (photo left) along with Dorcas R. Hardy (photo right), daughter of C. Colburn Hardy. The Older Advocate Award was established in memory of Colburn Hardy's achievements as a community leader, advocate, and elder statesman. The award recognizes an individual for volunteer leadership in programs for older Americans, with an emphasis on advocacy for older persons.

Lipscomb has spent over 30 years working on behalf of elders. He has been active in virtually all arenas affecting older people in Florida. He served in Washington as the Staff Director of the U.S. Senate Special Committee on Aging. In 1991, Lipscomb became the inaugural secretary of Florida's uniquely structured Department of Elder Affairs. Since then, he has remained one of the leading voices on all issues involving elders in Florida.

"It is my honor and privilege to present the first C. Colburn Hardy Award to E. Bentley Lipscomb," stated Dorcas R. Hardy. "Our first recipient is a man of stature ... someone who has been in the aging field as a professional and as a volunteer for many years. He is a combination of the energizer bunny, a worthy adversary and a tenacious crusader", said Dorcas R. Hardy.
