Senior volunteer Sarah Reinherz expanded her circle of friends by leaps and bounds while serving as a volunteer English teacher at a high school in Barlad, Romania. The photograph shows Reinherz in the classroom surrounded by her students. "I developed a warm and mutual admiration with teachers and students. It was a great love affair", says the retired teacher from Delray Beach, Florida.
Reinherz was part of a 27-member team of volunteers participating on a three-week Global Volunteers service program in Romania. Reinherz put her teaching skills to good use by teaching conversational English to high school students in Barlad which is located in eastern Romania. Reinherz has also taught English in China as a Global Volunteer. By immersing themselves in the local culture of Romania, the volunteers came away with new perspectives on its people and history. "The entire experience was filled with memorable events. I wish I could do more for these students. They are so eager and anxious to learn. We learned about their hopes and dreams." Romania is a beautiful country where past and present dramatically rub shoulders. During their free time, the volunteers had the opportunity to visit Transylvania at the foot of the Carpathian Mountains, historic castles, monasteries, and picturesque mountain villages.
