ZOOMER Ensures Students Are Well-read
Professor David Demko, PhD
ZOOMER Magazine, AgeVenture

super hero Think heroes are rare? "Think again". There are extraordinary seniors living such incredible lives, they have redefined what it means to be retired in the 21st Century.

Arnetta (photo) chose a renewed sense of purpose in retirement. She participates in the SunShine Readers program at an elementary school in Bluffton, South Carolina. The program matches needy children with reading improvement mentors.

Arnetta also volunteers at the Learning Center, a reading/mentoring program for high school students. She is also involved in a program called Take Flight where Arnetta develops readiness skills for at-risk kindergartners. Duncan's dedication has inspired other seniors to become involved in the schools.

Arnetta is also involved with Habitat for Humanity which enables her to work with Habitat recipients to provide guidance with financial budgeting, life skills and moral support. There's still more. Her alliance with The American Hospice Care began with her own experience with hospice during her husband’s bout with cancer, and now Arnetta is on hand to support both patients and their families, emotionally and spiritually.

When she is not volunteering her time, she loves to travel and recently made her first trip to Africa. Before her retirement, Arnetta’s worked as a marine biologist.
