A generation ago, parents worried about "why Johnny can't read". These days, however, the new generation of baby boomer parents don't have that problem. Today's parents worry about "why Johnny AND Mary can't read". Reading proficiency is often cited as the greatest predictor of a child's future success in school and in life. While every young student should be able to read confidently, fully 75% of America's 4th graders are not reading at grade level. The result is very frustrated groups of parents, students, and teachers. All blame each other for the failure of American education. All this finger-pointing has a double-downside. First, finger-pointing is devisive. Only a consolidated, team-effort will produce results. Second, finger-pointing can only assign blame, rather than produce the needed solution.
Thankfully, someone has decided to do something constructive about America's national tragedy in reading. The Sylvan Learning Foundation has launched "Book Adventure", a free online program that intends to motivate millions of students nationwide to achieve reading success with today's interactive, made-for-kids technology. Aimed primarily at elementary school students and guided by professional educators, Book Adventure motivates students to read more often, for longer periods of time, and with greater understanding. The lively and colorful format of this new Internet website ensures that the young user's experience will not only be educationaly, but engaging and entertaining. For children, Book Adventure offers a special program that helps keds enjoy as sense of accomplishment, recognition, and belonging. For parents, Book Adventure serves as a powerful, at-home resource of 2,500 titles that allow the parents to follow their child's progress and share in their accomplishments. For teachers, Book Adventure functions as a management tool that supports the current reading curriculum. With summer coming up, Book Adventure offers boomer parents the following tips for keeping their children's reading skills sharp.
