Diane Driver, In the Driver Seat of Gerontology Leadership
Professor David Demko, PhD
AgeVenture News Service

Diane Driver Diane Driver typifies America's "on-the-go" boomer. Active, involved, and most of all ... making a difference. As the Academic Coordinator of the Resource Center on Aging at the University of California, Berkeley, Dr. Driver keeps the field of aging on the move by keeping gerontologists both well-informed on age-related issues and well-equipped with the latest learning resources for making a difference in the lives of the nation's elderly.

Driver, also an avid avocational knitter (pictured with her colorful yarns), has directed the efforts of The Center since 1984, laying the groundwork for its official opening the following year in October 1985. The Resource Center on Aging is the coordinating mechanism for activities in aging on the UC Berkeley campus. It houses a small lending library available to students, faculty, staff, and the general public.

Fortunately, the resources of The Center have been extended far beyond the geographic proximity of Berkeley. In order to make this happen, Dr. Driver launched and maintains an extensive Internet web site that helps extend The Center's resources to gerontologists around the world. The web site is located on the Internet at: socrates.berkeley.edu/~aging/. And, if you're so inclined to keep up with advances in aging on a regular basis, you can subscribe to Driver's bi-weekly newsletter that's replete with announcements about new publications, media, research, training, and job opportunities. The e-mail address is: ddriver@uclink4.berkeley.edu

Dr. Driver received her Ph.D. from the School of Social Welfare at Berkeley in 1988 with an emphasis in gerontology, and wrote her dissertation on the organization and financing of long-term care in the United States with a focus on spend-down in nursing homes.

Prior to attending UC Berkeley, Dr. Driver lived in San Diego, California where she received a Master's degree and Bachelor of Arts degree in Social Work from California State University, San Diego. She has worked as a psychiatric social worker and case manager with older adults.

Here's a rundown on what this working mother with two grown children is up to these days in addition to her day-to-day operational duties at The Center.
  • authors and co-authors journal articles.
  • edits conference proceedings on various aspects of aging.
  • serves as editor of the Center's email newsletter "Resources on Aging".
  • serves as webmaster for the Center's extensive Internet WEB site.
  • maintains active membership in numerous professional associations on aging.
  • serves on boards and committees of public service agencies.
  • spokesperson and public-speaker on aging-related issues of national concern.
Let's hope this active boomer keeps up her good work in the service of Older Americans. After all, boomers have always had high hopes and great expectations about every event in their lives, and their retirement years are no exception. Gerontology leaders like Diane are hard at work helping to ensure that those expectations are fulfilled.
